User review:
This kayak is absolutely a great hybrid between recreational and touring kayaks. It is easy to handle, fast and safe, even more comfortable than many cruising kayaks I have tried.
It is distinguished by its hull width - it is only 66 cm compared to the usual 68-76 cm of most recreational boats. This allows for more efficient paddling with less effort and less lateral movement. Still, the Carolina 12 is more maneuverable than standard cruising kayaks. In calm conditions and with a load of about 73 kg, a few strong paddle strokes can turn the boat 80 degrees.
But what really impressed me about this kayak is its safety. With a longer front end than recreational kayaks, it is less likely to fill with water, whether it be through waves or other disturbed water conditions. In addition, it has a bulkhead located just forward of the footrests, which means that if you capsize, the water picked up won't get into the bow, making it easier to self-elevate or swim to shore.
Comfort is another thing I have to praise. The cockpit is 100 cm long, which is longer than in a touring kayak, and this allows you to lift both knees at once, reducing the strain that many people feel after paddling for long periods of time with their legs almost strained.
And in terms of construction, the Carolina 12 is a really durable piece. When I paddled upstream near a rocky riverbank and hit a few barely submerged rocks, only shallow scratches remained.
It has two parallel channels on either side of the keel to help maintain the shape of the torso and minimize lateral movements. The kayak is ready to install a rudder, but I would recommend thinking carefully about whether it is worth the complications.
My only reservations? It's not possible to adjust the distance of the footrests when sitting in the kayak, but if only one person is using it, it's not a significant problem.
In short, if you want to paddle more than a few miles and feel uncomfortable in a touring kayak, the Carolina 12 could be a great choice for you.
